The UK’s New Online Immigration System: What You Need to Know

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is moving towards a completely digital immigration process. This means your physical documents (like Biometric Residence Permits) are being replaced with an online record called an eVisa.

What is an eVisa?

An eVisa is a secure, digital version of your UK immigration status and permissions. To access it, you’ll need a UKVI account. This change won’t alter your current status or rights in the UK.

Benefits of an eVisa

  • Enhanced Security: eVisas are harder to lose, steal, or counterfeit compared to physical documents.
  • Convenience: No more waiting for physical documents after your application is approved.
  • Easy Status Verification: Quickly prove your right to work, rent, or cross UK borders.

Why Do I Need a UKVI Account?

Your UKVI account is your gateway to your eVisa and its associated information. You can also use your account to easily share your immigration status proof with employers, landlords, and others.

How It Works

  • View Your Details: See your visa type, expiry date, and UK stay conditions.
  • Update Information: Keep your contact details and passport information current.
  • Prove Your Status: Generate secure codes to share with employers, landlords, etc.

How to Get an eVisa

The process depends on your current immigration document:

  • BRP Holders: The UKVI will contact you with instructions before your BRP expires in December 2024.
  • Other Document Holders: If you need to renew your status or have a different type of document, follow the standard UK immigration application process.
